10 Reasons Why Studying A Master’s Degree Abroad Could be the Best Decision of Your Life

Getting a master’s degree is a big decision. It’s a course altering move that requires a massive amount of your time and financial resources. Studying abroad, either in part or in full, is just as big a decision with as many implications for your living situation. So, if you were to combine these two things into one major decision, you might not be able to parse the benefits of it at all!

In times like these, it’s best to make a list, so that’s what we’ll do. Here are 10 whole reasons why studying for a master’s degree abroad might be a great decision for you:

  1. Life Experience: This is a broader benefit of studying abroad in any capacity (or travel in general), but living away from your home country allows you to further understand other cultures and the world as a whole!

  2. Networking Opportunities: Making career connections is a major part of graduate school in general, this is only amplified when you can cast a wider net when you are in a whole different country.

  3. Education Quality: The same way your home country isn’t the whole world, the education system you're used to isn’t the only one out there. There are bound to be areas in which foreign universities excel that the surrounding ones do not. It doesn’t hurt to aim high and try for a prestigious university abroad.

  4. Something for the Resume: Companies and hiring managers can be prone to liking adventurous people. So, if you have an entire degree earned in another country on your CV, it checks that box.

  5. Cost: A major factor in many students' choice to study abroad is the cost of living and tuition fees. Many students think to themselves: “I want to study abroad, but I have no money”. It’s a legitimate focus. Citizens of the European Union can go to any college in the EU as if they lived in the same country as the college and if you live in the US, many countries have a lower cost of living. If an opportunity is out there to save money, why not take it!

  6. Linguistics: This is another more general benefit to living abroad, but it applies just the same. Learning a foreign language only expands your opportunities in life and in your career.

  7. Enhanced Responsibility: When you are in the field of your master’s degree, one can assume you’ll have more on your plate than you do currently. If you have all the experience of uprooting your life to another country and administrating it so you excel in your studies there, this increase in responsibility won’t be as difficult to adjust to.

  8. Specificity: Say you have an especially specific field or degree you’d like to get your master’s degree in. The Science of Nursing, Research, or whatever the case may be. The prime place to learn your chosen subject might be abroad, and if so, it only makes sense to pursue that!

  9. Extra Options: All the colleges and universities in your home country aren’t all that’s out there. It only makes sense to consider all possibilities when making as big a decision as graduate school. Why not take everything into account when researching, including whatever opportunities foreign schools provide.

  10. Go For It!: It’s hard to quantify the benefit of simply taking a big risk. Getting out of your comfort zone is an important part of life. This is a perfect way to do so.

We’ve just gone over 10 reasons why studying for a master’s degree abroad might be a great move for you! If you’d like to learn further about navigating this and other decisions in your application process, we’re here to help.
