Early decision vs Early action
When applying for admission to the university, students are often confused about the issue of deadlines and believe that they are all the same, but NO, and it is important to know and be prepared for which one to apply.
EARLY DECISION: The typical Deadline is around November. Students can apply to only one school for ED and decisions are sent out in December. Do this if you have one dream school.
PROS
Many schools have higher acceptance rates for ED.
Schools know your commitment, so your chances can be (slightly) increased.
CONS
An acceptance is binding, and you must withdraw applications from other schools.
Beware of senioritis: don't let your grades slip just because you got in early.
EARLY ACTION: Students can apply to multiple schools. Apps are due sometime in the fall, Decisions are sent out in December - February.
PROS
Students receive their acceptances sooner than regular decision applicants and have flexibility
Students can spend more time focusing on financial aid applications.
CONS
You still have to prepare your other applications, just in case the Regular Decision deadline falls right after decisions are mailed out.
Does not demonstrate the same level of interest as an applicant applying ED.
Approximately 450 colleges have early decision or early action plans, and some have both. Some colleges offer a nonbinding option called single-choice early action, under which applicants may not apply ED or EA to any other college.
