How to deal with homesickness at university
If you just moved out for college, you may be feeling homesick. After all, this could very well be your first time away from the comforts of home and moving to a new place can be stressful, so it's perfectly normal to be homesick once in a while.
But don't worry, it is something that happens to people all the time, so there's plenty of advice to help you deal with it. We've put together some tips for dealing with college homesickness.
Explore your new home
Being alone in a room can make your mind wander. Scrolling through Instagram and seeing your friends go home and do errands without you is not going to be a pleasant experience, it just adds to your nostalgia. So why not take a walk instead of exploring your new territory? You might find a new place you like, whether it's a friendly coffee shop or a nearby park.
Visiting and exploring other places nearby can really help you fall in love with your new surroundings, which in turn can help lessen the longing for home.
Bring home comforts to university
Whether it's a teddy bear you got as a gift as a kid, or a blanket to keep you warm at night, they can be a must-have to ward off homesickness. One thing college students often do when they move into a new home is decorate their bedroom walls with photos of friends and family; it's a great reminder that they're always there even when you're not near them. It can also make your new space feel more familiar and comfortable. This is especially useful if you are studying abroad.
We all have little things that remind us of home. Whatever comfort you have at home, bring it to college!
Allow yourself to fell homesick
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being homesick in college. Of course, it's not a nice feeling, but it's best to remember that it's completely normal and experienced by thousands of people.
No one should be always happy. Being positive no matter how bad things get and do more harm than good, so don’t feel obligated to be brave all day every day.
Let your emotions feel; college homesickness is not a weakness, but a natural part of freshmen.
