How to get the best letters of recommendation?
Every university want to know what other people think about you like when you choose a new restaurant and read recommendations.
Before you ask for the cards, answer these three questions:
Will this person have nice things to say about me?
When you think about recommenders, your number one goal is to find someone who is genuinely interested in writing about you as a student and as a person. There is a big difference between letters written with enthusiasm and letters written out of "compulsion."
2. Does this person know me well enough to write a great letter?
You can choose one of your favorite teachers or the teacher of a class where you had difficulties. You want me to be able to talk about your work ethic, determination, creativity, or positive personality traits. That is the basis of an excellent letter. The best recommendations come from teachers who can talk to you personally, even if you struggled in their class.
3. Have I given my recommender enough time to write a quality letter?
Your professors need time to write you a quality letter, so give them as much notice as possible. Our recommendation is that you give them 2 weeks minimum. You will see that with time for reflection, effort and dedication to the person who is going to do you the favor, you will get an excellent letter of recommendation.
