Summer Guide: How to Prepare for Applying to International Universities
We hope you’re enjoying a well-deserved break this summer. Laughter, sunshine, and relaxation are essential parts of this season. However, as you know, time slips through our fingers, and before we realize it, it’s time to return to our routines. Amid all the fun and rest, there’s an important task we can’t postpone any longer: submitting our college applications.
That’s why we’ve put together a list of things you can do to take those first steps:
1. Create a List of Interested Universities
At the beginning of summer, dedicate time to research and compile a list of universities that interest you. Consider factors like academic programs, location, student life, and financial opportunities. This list will be the foundation of your planning and will help you stay focused on your goals. Don’t limit yourself to just a few options; expanding your search will allow you to find the university that best suits your needs and expectations.
2. Visit the Universities
If possible, organize visits to the universities that intrigue you the most. These visits can be crucial for your final decision and provide valuable insights that may influence your application essays. Walking around campus, talking to students and professors, and observing the facilities will give you a clear idea of whether that university is the right fit for you. If you can’t visit in person, many universities offer virtual tours that can be just as helpful.
3. Start Working on the Common App
The Common App is one of the most important components of your application. I recommend starting to work on it in early August. Take your time to reflect and write an essay that truly represents you. This is your space to tell your story, highlight your achievements, and demonstrate your passion and commitment. A well-written essay can make a significant difference in your application, so don’t leave it until the last moment.
4. Plan Your Time for Writing Your Essays
By the end of August or early September, you should have a clear idea of which universities you’ll be applying to. This will allow you to properly plan the time you’ll dedicate to each university’s specific essays. Each university may have different questions or requirements, so organize your time to address each one with the attention and dedication it deserves. A writing calendar will help you stay on track and avoid last-minute stress.
5. Allocate Time for Revision
No matter how late you start writing your essays, make sure to leave at least three weeks between your first draft and the application submission date. This will give you enough time to revise and improve your essays through multiple drafts. Seek feedback from friends, family, or professors and use their comments to refine your work. Remember, universities can perceive if an application has been prepared last minute, which may reflect a superficial interest in their institution.
